One of my long-standing fascinations with any culture is it's connection to the land. The Maori consider themselves to be the "kaitiaki", the keepers of the land. They refer to New Zealand as the "Papatuanuku", the Earth Mother. One story I heard explained that Papatuanuku gave the Maori this beautiful land as a reward for their bravery in sailing across the ocean.
